Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to

  • Describe the major ecological processes at different scales (i.e., individual plants to ecosystems and watersheds) and how they influence the sustainability of agricultural landscapes.
  • Describe the specific roles of agricultural systems, forests, prairies, wetlands on ecological and hydrological processes within a landscape and identify the linkages between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.
  • Predict the impact of natural disturbances and human land management activities (especially related to different agricultural practices) on ecological and hydrological processes and assess those impacts in the field.
  • Describe the dynamics of ecological processes related to nutrient, water, and carbon cycling in a range of different natural and managed terrestrial ecosystems (e.g., annual cropping systems, prairies, woodlands, wetlands, savannas).
  • Identify the major ecological, water quality, quantity and timing problems facingagricultural landscapes in Iowa, the Midwest, the nation and the world and be able to discuss possible physical, social and political solutions.
